A slick new interface cuts out a lot of the "extra" stuff, making for a more focused, simpler and enjoyable user experience. You can also make "lists" based on ideas like birthdays or occassions, browse deals, see what others are shopping and more.

When you buy something, you want to make sure you're getting the right product and at the best price. Shop Savvy does exactly that, not to mention, it can also scan those interesting little QR Codes - the square barcode things you see to the left of this text. Try it!... (learn more)

Camera360 Ultimate

When it comes to camera apps on the Market it's hard to find one that balances advanced features while still being fun and easy to use. The reason Camera360 Ultimate gets our top camera pick is because of great design and ease of use.

While other camera apps are jam packed with special effects and features, it's far too overwhelming for every day use and impossible for a quick pic situation. But this doesn't mean Camera 360 skimps on features; in fact, it even added the often forgot HDR effect not found in many other camera apps on the Market.

Camera360 is the best Camera App for Android because it offers the perfect balance between rich features and good, simple, user friendly fun.... (learn more)

Documents To Go 3.0 Main App

Documents to Go was one of the first office suites on Android, and while many more have popped up since the Android market took off, the folks at Dataviz have proven that they know how to stay ahead of the curve. The application itself is more than usable and mirrors premier desktop offerings. File compatibility is great, and flexibility in creating powerpoints, excel sheets and word documents is superb. (You can also view .PDF files. And for business professionals, D2G is one of few applications that supports password-protected files.)

Aside from core functionality being great, Dataviz also offers Google Docs integration. It isn't as seamless as one would hope, but being able to download and edit files from your Google account is a god-send. And that's even with Google bringing out a native version of Docs for Android which mainly uses webkit. (It's slower and a bit more frustrating to work with compared to the native UI of Documents to Go.) They also have their own-built desktop synchronization platform.... (learn more)

CardioTrainer Old Weight Loss

Noom Weight Loss may be new to the Android Market, but it combines two tried and true fitness apps from WorkSmart Labs into a single exercise and diet tracking interface that takes the hard work out of staying on top of your weight loss plan. Noom is equal parts Calorific and CardioTrainer, with a simple weight tracking dialogue bridging the two.

Calorific makes tracking your diet easy by eliminating calorie counting and instead allowing you to estimate portion size and calorie intake with a simple color-coded system. CardioTrainer lets you keep tabs on your fitness level and track runs or bike rides via GPS (but the number of activities which can be monitored is much greater, ranging from weightlifting and rowing to simple activities like driving). Sharing stats to Facebook, reminder alerts, and scheduled workouts make sure you stay on track for fitness success. It's everything you'd want in a single, neat, and fun package from a team of real fitness fanatics. ... (learn more)

Let's face it (pun not intended), nearly everyone has Facebook: your Uncle Johnny in Topeka, your Aune Elenor in Alaska, even your Great Great Grandma in Tuscon. Chances are you'll be downloading Facebook, too, so we figured why not point you in the right direction.

There are some other Facebook apps on Android Market, but the Official FB app does just fine, so we'll stick to calling it the best unless/until something changes. Don't forget to search Phandroid on Facebook and like us!... (learn more)

AndExplorer

AndExplorer is the one file manager app that people keep coming
back to time and time again, despite the overwhelming amount of
entries in this category. It provides all the function and features you'll
need in a simple file managing app without all the extra fluff.
Selecting multiple files, copying, and cutting is simple and doesn't
involve too much thinking. Simplicity is good. The scrolling is smooth and
the UI is straight to the point.

This app can do a whole lot including unzipping compressed
folders, but a nice touch are the hints and tips provided to beginning users. ... (learn more)

Brightest Flashlight Free™

You may not be able to pinpoint a specific time you used your phone's screen to navigate the darkness, but almost everyone has at some point. And you will again. There are a billion flashlight apps on Android Market and they're all inherently similiar, but if we had to choose the best it'd be Brightest Flashlight Free for two reasons: it's simple and flexible.

Best Flashlight Free allows you to use both your screen as a flashlight and your camera's flash as a flashlight- simultaneously. A few simple options allow you to use one at a time and toggle sound. That's about all this app does... and we like it that way. If you're looking for flashing lights, different colors, and other zany options for random reasons, look elsewhere. But as a functional flashlight, Best Flashlight Free is hard to top.... (learn more)

Epicurious Recipe App

With all the amazing recipe and food sites on the web, you'd think it would be pretty easy to an equally awesome Android app for finding, searching, and preparing your next great culinary creation. However, most food and recipe apps on Android Market are little more than a list of stuff found on the website. Save yourself the trouble of finding the perfect Recipe app and download Epicurious.

With a delightful theme, the Epicurious App is easily organized into categories such as weeknight dinners, desserts, cocktails, lunches, snacks and more, making finding the right recipe for your needs much easier. Flicking left and right when browsing gives the feel of sifting through recipe cards in you recipe box- a nice touch.

The recipe search on Epicurious allows you to select categories such as main ingredient, meal/course, cuisine, diet needs, occasion and enter keywords. It's a bit confusing at first but really allows you to hone in on what you're trying to find. Adding favorites and creating a shopping list are nice touches too, but the UI isn't quite appealing enough to accommodate.

It's not overwhelmingly awesome, but Epicurious has a wealth of recipes and the basic features to help you find just what you'll want to cook. And of course, the ingredients and directions on how to cook it.

Trillian

Instant messaging apps are a bit more difficult to do because of how abstract things can get. Depending on which messaging platforms you use, you might be backed up into a corner. For instance, Yahoo, Google and AOL make great applications for their own platforms, but you'll have to install another application if you use more than one protocol. It wouldn't be fair to pick anything other than a multi-protocol client, and Trillian is by far the best of the bunch.

It's quite easy to mess an instant messaging application up, but Trillian is one of VERY few applications that makes it quite hard to find any problems. It provides most of the popular protocols, including Yahoo, MSN, Google, AIM, ICQ, MySpace, Facebook and Jabber. It goes easy on battery life compared to other instant messaging applications, gives you a wide array of options to configure and doesn't present many problems as far as random disconnects go. (Something that seems to be a problem in a lot of other instant messaging applications.) And Trillian has clients on every major mobile and desktop platform, so moving around isn't an issue at all.

The only downside now that they've made the application free (it used to be a whopping $7) is that there's no Skype functionality. It was hard for me not to consider other services, such as imo and Fring, for that reason, but Skype integration (for text messaging, anyway) isn't all that great on those clients. If video calling isn't something you get into, a Trillian + official Skype application combo is as good as it's going to get.... (learn more)

Fandango Movies

Fandango tops our chart not so much for being a great way to find local movie showtimes, view high quality trailers and see reviews of all the latest features, but rather for the fact that it is linked into "the nation's leading movie ticketing service." After all, finding a showtime is only half the battle.

PowerAMP Music Player (Trial)

PowerAMP may not have bells and whistles such as wireless syncing with a desktop music manager, streaming radio and more neat features, but it's a pure music player that does the one thing it's supposed to do very well. Even in beta, PowerAMP was one of the best music players on the market and I knew it'd eventually mature into the absolute best.

The equalizer features are second to none, audio quality is great, there are many different codecs supported, tons of sorting options, album art management is topnotch and it does a really good job of organizing your music without you needing to think about it. And that's not even scratching the surface. This app isn't for you if you want a solution with built-in music synchronization and streaming radio, but if all you're looking for is a very solid music player you absolutely cannot go wrong with PowerAMP.... Google Maps

Google Maps comes pre-installed on the vast majority of Android devices and you needn't look elsewhere for maps, directions, or navigation solutions. Google Maps is by far the best solution in the category.

Google Maps has a multitude of options but they're oriented in a very friendly and easy to use manner. The most basic features allow you to look around locations on a map, get driving/transit/walking directions from one point to another, and turn-by-turn voice assisted navigation. You'll need to download a voice plugin for that last feature.

Google goes well beyond the mapping basics, allowing you to find businesses, read reviews, see local attractions, view various layers of information overlayed on the map, get street views to actually show you what physical addresses look like, and much more.

Google Maps is hands down the best mapping and navigation software in the world, and with the Google Maps App for Android, the company has brilliantly integrated the service for the mobile experience.... (learn more)

gReader (Google Reader | RSS)

I know it's a bit easy to put a Google Reader interface application at the top of our list of news readers, but Google Reader itself is such an invaluable tool. Sure, the "cloud-ness" of it all is cool, but Google affords users organization tools that make it easy to find the content that you consider important to you. And it just works really well. There's no manual sync operation to deal with, you don't have to enter new RSS feeds every time you reinstall the application or if you have to move to another platform, and you don't have much to worry about once it's all set up - it just works.

Having said all of that, we can't even recommend Google's own Reader application. No, we are quite fond of gReader instead. gReader features offline reading, podcasts, themes, more robust notification options, widgets, the ability to save files within the application, and - well - everything Google themselves provide in the core application and service.... Evernote

Evernote is a great platform for note-taking. Even if only for its desktop synchronization, it's an outstanding application. Take snippets of websites, jot down that phone number in times where a pen is not at your disposal and quickly save that image for perusal later. And you aren't only able to peruse an image with your eyes - you can have Evernote read it. This is where the platform's powerful search features come in.

EVERYTHING except for voice in a note can be searched. Did you snap a picture of an advertisement but only remember the word "shoe" and not the store name or brand? Evernote can find that for you. Did you save a link (bookmarking, if you will) but don't want to scroll through your notes to find it? Evernote can search for the link and the content within the link.

If you'd rather organize your notes so that you can easily find them without relying on search, the ability to create notebooks and tag notes is a godsend. It's simple, but can be very powerful and dynamic in organizing your content. ToDo lists are an entirely different beast, and while Evernote is no Remember the Milk replacement, you can use it to keep a quick, simple list of things to accomplish with the check button feature.... PhoneMyPC

PhoneMyPC is an easy to use app for remotely taking control of your
PC using nothing more than your Android smartphone. It works exactly the way
you would expect with your entire computer desktop being displayed on
your device with full pinch to zoom functions. You can then open files,
email a document you may have forgotten on your PC, or access pictures
and video.

Setup is extremely easy with installing an app on your computer, logging in and then using the app and a variety of shortcuts to do common tasks. One of the reasons this app stands out from other "VNC" apps on the Market is because it's extremely easy to use. While other apps require you're connected to the same Wi-Fi connection as your PC, with PhoneMyPC you can connect to your computer over a 3G network, meaning you can remotely access it almost anywhere.... Slacker Radio is what streaming music should be. A large selection of artists and songs, plenty of pre-made stations with great tunes, and a very easy to use interface. Playlists are hardly repetitive and smart matching of artists often leads to the discovery of new music. The app definitely benefits from a paid subscription, but even users of the free version should get more than their fill of quality tunes.

SystemPanel is an essential tool for monitoring how and what your Android phone is doing to help you manage your battery use. Its main page is straightforward and gets right to the point. A tap on the pie charts reveals detailed info and goes on to show free space on your SD card and battery charge level and temperature.

A tap on any of the running apps will quickly show how much of your CPU and memory that app is using and also provides a quick and easy way to stop the app if you think it's giving you any trouble whatsoever.

If you're strictly traveling and looking for things to do, you may want to download Trip Advisor, but for the all purpose Travel and Local Search award we've got to name Yelp! the Best Android App.
